Keeping and breeding of Russel’s sand boa (Gongylophis conicus Tokar, 1995) at BION Terrarium Center
Russel’s sand boa (also known as Common sand boa or the rough-tailed sand boa) Gongylophis conicus Tokar, 1995, formerly – Eryx conicus (Schneider, 1801) (Tokar, 1995), is a small-sized non-venomous snake from Boidae family (Erycinae subfamily).
Keeping. We keep our G. conicus either in terrariums 90x40x50 cm (35.43×15.74×19.68 in) or in containers 45x30x14 cm (17.71×11.81×5.51 in), one at a time with good top ventilation in the lid. As a substrate we use river sand with a layer of 5-7 cm (1.96-2.75 in) or large sawdust of deciduous trees with a layer of 4-6 cm (1.57-2.36 in). A drinking bowl with water is constantly present. Since we have laboratory keeping approach, we do not use decorations.
