In 1987, the American Federation of Herpetoculture published the first issue of the Vivarium magazine. It found its place in US bookstores alongside tropical-fish titles and natural-history publications — a color magazine for people who kept reptiles and amphibians, at a time when no such thing had existed before.
Through the 1990s it covered care, vivarium design, legislation, and what its founders called the philosophy of the human–herp interface. When the AFH closed, the magazine ended with it. The final issue came out in 2000.
